Week 2 Term 4 Reading Activity

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on July the 18th, 1918. He was born on the eastern coast of Africa in Mvezo. Nelson Mandela’s father died when he was nine and was then raised by royalty. He became the first person in his family to go to school. In his young adulthood, he became an activist with the African National Congress. Knowing the power of young people he started a African National Congress Youth League.

Nelson was arrested in 1962 after being on the run for 17 months. He was put in Robben Island which was in the middle of the bay and it had sharks around it so people could not escape.

Nelson Mandela was released from Robben Island after being on it for 27 years. 3 years after that he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end apartheid. Months later he ran for president and became the president of South Africa. He finally stepped down as president of South Africa in 1999. Nelson Mandela died on December 5 2013.
